Named for the journalism style created by the writer Hunter S. Thompson, it has vibrant nightclub décor, and a French-bread pizza like the supermarket staple that was popular at the time. The dining room and a bar are on the ground floor. Upstairs, there is a raw bar, charcuterie station and an all-weather veranda with cabanas and a tiki bar.

Just Opened NY // Bar Gonzo - 70's Themed Restaurant & Bar Opens

A bar inspired by Hunter S. Thompson has opened in Hell’s Kitchen promising some serious entertainment including fire breathers and burlesque performers – Bar Gonzo. The 70’s themed restaurant and lounge is owned by the guy behind Gallow Green and The Heath at the McKittrick Hotel and has some similar colorful decor to his other spots. The colorful spot also takes inspiration from other famed authors including Ernest Hemingway and George Plimpton but, rest assured, you won’t be getting any reading done here.

Thompson and George Plimpton with neon signs, marble detailing and various statues of the bar’s "spirit animal"–the peacock—throughout Bar Gonzo.
